To make the first FEAR Community CTF Tournament more exciting and motivate players to do their best, we opened this space so you can donate to the Prize Pool.
To avoit getting a too big prize, It will be some game keys donated by:HappyStick
Thanks for the feedback and Ideas everybody shared.June 7, 2012 at 12:09 pm #975
I will donate, but idk If money or a FEAR 3 Game is best, It depends on what others donate, keys for all the players in the winner team would be nice, but only 1 maybe notJune 7, 2012 at 12:11 pm #976
I’ll donate 25$ USD for starters (for now), just make a list in the opening post of people willing to donate and what they are willing to donateJune 7, 2012 at 12:30 pm #978
There are pros and cons to cash donations which can twist the tournament in different ways.
- More incentive for people to play
- Winning means a bit more than bragging rights and will feel more rewarding
- Newer and less skilled players may not want to participate if they have to donate and will feel that it is pointless to play a tournament with these donations because the best teams will just win it all.
- If the cash prize does become relatively significant in amount, some players might cheat because they want to win it so bad.
Right now I will look into some options to see what I can do to drum up some support for the tournament:
1) Talk to my server provider about sponsoring the tournament, see if they are willing to provide prizes like 1 free server for a month or a % discount on a server for the lifetime of the rental to the winning team.
2) Talk to some of my contacts about putting up some free steam keys for various games. I have contacts at various Montreal-based studios and will reach out to some where appropriate and see what I can drum up. Can’t make any promises but I’ll see what I can do.
3) Community-based ‘glory’ titles – i.e. Give people special award or status posted in the loading screen of our servers. I.e. say “CountryHam is a fucking PWNER for winning this tournament like a boss”
I’ll try and think of some other ideas but for the meantime I need to get back to workJune 7, 2012 at 12:38 pm #979
People don’t HAVE to donate at all, that’s why it’s a donation… Not donating gives you just as much right to play.
I could ask HasslHoff if he’s willing to ask ESL if we’re allowed to use ESL Wire for the matches. I’m sure that can be arranged fairly easily. Are you interested in that Fred?
IMO the only problem would be possible hacking to win, which could be solved with Wire, and will already be made very difficult with SEC2June 7, 2012 at 12:39 pm #980
Donation Will not be Mandatory, that would kill the tournament
About the Community Based Glory titles, I like It ^_^June 7, 2012 at 12:44 pm #981
@happystick I wonder If It’s possible, since only ESL official matches actually use WIRE antihack, and FEAR Section was closed.
BTW I think referees should be watching the game to ensure everybody Is clean. being only 8 players in the match makes It easier than with bigger teams.June 7, 2012 at 1:55 pm #984
If there are cash prizes, there should be some sort of division between the top 3 teams, I’ve spoken to some people who are uncomfortable about it all going to 1 team.
Also, it would be cool to have other prizes that have no relation to as to how well your team placed, but perhaps actions performed in game.
- Best kill or killstreak
- Biggest fail moment
- Most flags capped per individual
- Most kills in a tournament match
..you get the idea and can likely think of other ideas like this to add.June 7, 2012 at 1:57 pm #985
How I like the idea, the ones you named do mostly involve skill-level, so some other things would possibly be a bit more ‘general’…if you know what I mean. Also, in order for random people to receive things the prize pool would have to be quite diverse and have more to offer than let’s say 250 bucks divided between a couple of teams, resulting in barely anything. I’d say that the winner gets like 75% of the big prize and 2nd place (winner of the loser brackets) gets ~25%…then a couple of those random prizes you talked aboutJune 7, 2012 at 2:23 pm #986
Absolutely, the division of a cash prize is very dependent on how large the cash pool gets. This is something that can be worked out closer to the tournament launch depending on how big it gets (if a cash prize is even included).
Let’s say, hypothetically, that an amount like $500 is raised for the tournament. $500 really isn’t much money to split among 1 team, let alone 3. If it all went to 1 team, congrats, each member just won $125. Big whoop. I make much more than that on a daily basis and winning $125 isn’t going to do much to change my life.
If it were divided between 3 teams, say 50% for 1st, 30% for 2nd, and 20% for 3rd, that’s diluting it to a rather trivial amount.
Each member of the winning team would get $62.50, each member of the 2nd place team would get $37.50, and each member of the 3rd place team would get $25. None of those amounts of money are worth winning, and I think that the money would be better put towards buying prizes such as games, server rentals, mousepads, mice, keyboards, etc.
For example, if ~$192 was raised, it would be enough to pay for a 16 slot server for a year. A server could then be purchased and given to the winner.
I just think that a cash prize is pretty pointless unless we get a serious sponsor dumping $1000 on us, and even at that point, it would probably be better used on tangible prizes than being wired a small amount of cash.
I know that Ep1c or Shark had reached out to some hardware companies in the past and received some PC cases and other things as prizes for TcS tournaments, this is also a good idea that we could use. It would be free publicity for whichever companies do end up sponsoring (let’s say a company that manufactures many goods like corsair, cooler master, antec, thermaltake, lian li, razer, creative, steelseries etcetcetc, could give cases, psu, ram, cpu coolers, mice, keyboards, headsets etc).
It never hurts to send an email to their promo departments and see what kind of deal you can work out. Them donating a few items is really no $ lost to them and it’s free advertising and shows that they care about gaming communities, large and small.June 7, 2012 at 2:47 pm #988
Fred, I spoke to HasslHoff a bit, and the problem with adding Wire would be that the SEC2 keys do not have GUIDS. In order for it to function there have to be hashes containing certain ID’s so it can identify it. Maybe you should ask HasslHoff to work together on this so we can at least stop worrying about possible cheating going on. I guess a ‘special SEC’ specifically for this tourney, involving keys generated only for this tourney, that then create unique ID’s that can be used by Wire would be the solution.June 7, 2012 at 7:39 pm #991
AFAIK Wire uses PB GUID’s, not FEAR Keys.
SEC2 doesn’t mess with PB, It can be enabled as usual.
I’ll ask @phreeze about. But I doubt that’s actually a problem, as I said.
Also, thinking about people Hacking is a bit disapointing, we are here to have fun and support the game we love, If someone is hacking, you guys will notice. I choose to trust the people, more than anything else. If
It’s actually possible to use Wire, It’s good, but If not, I doubt someone will show up now complaining that the players you have known for so long are hacking.June 7, 2012 at 8:31 pm #993
It’s not the players that we’ve known for so long so much as the people we’ve never heard of. If somebody I’ve never heard of starts playing better than Chort or Happystick, I would be confused as to what is going on.
At the end of the day, it would be really sad if somebody did, and I’m not expecting anybody to. Just when prizes are involved, it just takes 1 person to ruin things using the honor system.June 7, 2012 at 11:54 pm #994
Nobody is stupid enough to try and hack in this tournament, any player in this tournament can spot a hacker easily.
Also with admins spectating the game’s it will be even more retarded…..
Hope there’s no drama.June 8, 2012 at 7:03 am #996
yes think also, tournament very good for fear but with prise in it it should get little messy
I will play for fun and competition!!!!!
